Background

Allwood Road is classified as an urban minor arterial roadway, consisting of four travel lanes, no shoulders, railroad crossing, and a two-lane roundabout located approximately midway along the corridor. Average annual daily traffic volumes are approximately 20,000 vehicles per day. Allwood Road has posted speed limit signs between 25 MPH and 40 MPH.

The roundabout bisects the corridor at Bloomfield Avenue into two distinct neighborhoods. East of the roundabout, commercial strip mall developments and light industrial properties predominate. Most of the commercial properties have their main access driveways from Route 3, with secondary access from Allwood Road. Two large cemeteries are located within this segment of the corridor. West of the roundabout, residential properties predominate until the intersection of Clifton Avenue.
